The story is read with much expression and intonation. Story props and other items will be used to build interest and enhance the lesson or theme of the story. The interactive read-aloud experience will help each child develop comprehension and vocabulary skills, as well as oral language and listening skills. Literacy terminology like author, illustrator, and genre will be introduced, as well. Fun follow-up activities, such as a BINGO literacy game with a chance to win prizes or a simple art project, are available options. The entire read-aloud session can be customized to fit a specific theme and the needs of the group. Children absolutely love listening to and participating in read-aloud experiences. They will leave the session overjoyed and eager to read books every day!
Recommended Grade Levels: 4th - 8th
Duration of Event: 1 1/2 Hours - 2 Hours
The children will receive the same age-appropriate chapter book about 2-weeks prior to the actual meeting with the expectation that it will be COMPLETELY read by ALL participants before the meeting date. It is highly recommended that the participants be grouped by grade level. During the book club discussion session, the facilitator will guide the students through the book, chapter-by-chapter, discussing the setting, genre, characters, major events, themes, plot problems, and solutions. The facilitator will also focus on comprehension, vocabulary, and oral language skills. During the session, the participants will make connections, answer and ask questions in an open discussion about the book. Story props and role-playing may be used to enhance and deepen comprehension levels. Participants may be asked to volunteer to read excerpts from the story, as well. It is a good idea to provide beverages and snacks for the participants to enjoy during the session. This is a great opportunity for the participants to gather among their peers while strengthening their literacy skills.
